Remembrance Day and Care for Veterans and Seniors

gold paper starsAt Barrie South Chiropractic Centre we wish to commemorate our veterans, especially those patients in our clinic who have sacrificed their lives while serving our country. Their incredible sacrifice is something for which we all are grateful.

We also want to herald all of our senior patients as we have much to learn from them. This month we want to encourage seniors to stay active, which can help them lead healthier lives through every golden year!

Bone Up on Health

Up until your late 30s and early 40s, the body absorbs calcium into the bones; after this time, calcium is used from the bones. As a result of this, weight-bearing activities are essential in the later years, along with calcium and vitamin D supplements.

Stay in Motion

With age, our bodies’ tissues become less elastic and more plastic. That’s why maintaining flexibility is critical. It’s also important to stay active. Avoid prolonged sitting or any static activity for any longer than 30 minutes.

Remember, too, that motion is lotion, which essentially means that exercise can protect your joints and help you maintain function. Conversely, the tendency to want to rest can have a cascading negative effect as being inactive is detrimental to your health. Remember that hurt does not equal harm. That simply means that it’s important to continue to exercise even if there’s some pain involved.

For a gentle form of exercise that keeps you moving, consider Tai Chi. This graceful and slow-moving type of exercise is ideal for seniors as it doesn’t put too much strain on the muscles. To get started go to the following website.
